The Osoyoos Desert Centre boardwalk

A few minutes north of town, a raised wooden boardwalk floats over one of the rarest ecosystems in the country: the antelope-brush desert that survives in less than a tenth of its original range. The Osoyoos Desert Centre protects a precious pocket of it, and lets you walk through without leaving a footprint.

What you'll see

Interpretive stations explain the plants that engineered survival here, while the wildlife provides the drama: western meadowlarks singing from the brush, lizards sunning on the boards, and, if luck runs hot, a burrowing owl or a respectful glimpse of a rattlesnake.

When to go

Morning, full stop. The desert is most alive (and most comfortable) before the heat builds; guided walks, when offered, are worth timing your visit around. The centre operates seasonally, spring through fall.

Why it matters

This habitat is among Canada's most endangered, home to species found nowhere else in the country. An hour here recalibrates how you see every sagebrush hillside for the rest of your trip.
