Spotted Lake: the story behind Osoyoos’s most unusual landmark

Ten minutes west of town on Highway 3, a small lake does something no other lake in Canada does: each summer, as water evaporates, it separates into hundreds of mineral pools, rimmed circles of green, yellow, and blue scattered across the lakebed like a painter's palette.

The science

Spotted Lake is one of the most mineral-dense lakes anywhere, saturated with magnesium sulphate, calcium, sodium sulphates, and traces of many other minerals. As summer evaporation concentrates them, minerals crystallize into the walkways between pools, and each pool's chemistry sets its colour. Peak spotting is mid-to-late summer.

The sacred story

To the Syilx people of the Okanagan Nation, the lake is kłlilxʼw, a sacred medicine lake whose minerals and mud have healed for generations. The land is protected and access is restricted, which is why visitors view it respectfully from the highway pullout rather than walking to the shore.

Seeing it

Pull off Highway 3 at the viewpoint, bring a zoom lens, and go in the afternoon when the light hits the circles best. It pairs perfectly with a drive to Mount Kobau or a wine-country afternoon.
