Nk’Mip Cellars: North America’s first Indigenous-owned winery

Just across the lake from downtown Osoyoos stands a winery that made continental history. Nk’Mip Cellars (pronounced "in-ka-meep"), owned by the Osoyoos Indian Band, opened as the first Indigenous-owned winery in North America, and it would be worth visiting even without the milestone: the wines and the setting are superb.

What to taste

The portfolio runs from crisp whites through serious reds, with the Qwam Qwmt ("achieving excellence") tier the collector's pick. Riesling, pinot blanc, syrah, and merlot all shine here in the desert heat.

What to see

The winery's architecture rises from the sagebrush hillside above Osoyoos Lake, with a patio view that belongs on postcards. Pair it with the adjacent Nk’Mip Desert Cultural Centre to understand the land you're tasting, the Band's story, told brilliantly, of thousands of years in this desert.
