Cherry season & fruit stands: the South Okanagan harvest calendar

The same sun that ripens the grapes runs Canada's most delicious produce economy. From June to October, the highways around Osoyoos line up with fruit stands whose stock changes weekly, and knowing the calendar is knowing when to visit.

The harvest calendar

Mid-June–July: cherries, the valley's crown jewels, celebrated at Osoyoos's Canada Day Cherry Fiesta. July: apricots arrive. Mid-July–September: peach season, arguably the desert's finest hour. August: nectarines, plums, early apples. September–October: apples, pears, and grape season, when the whole valley smells like harvest.

Fruit-stand strategy

Shop morning for the freshest picks, bring cash for the smaller stands, and buy the "seconds" boxes for smoothies and grilling, half the price, all the flavour. The stretch toward Keremeos, the self-titled fruit stand capital of Canada, rewards a dedicated cruise.

What to do with the haul

Every room here has a fridge; the suite has a full-size one. Grilled peaches on the BBQ deck with a Black Sage red is the entire South Okanagan on one plate.
